Role Overview

A Project Procurement Professional (Electrical & Automation) in heavy industrial EPC sectors (Cement, Minerals & Mining, Metals) manages the specialized sourcing of power distribution systems, plant-wide automation (DCS/PLC/SCADA), instrumentation, and drives. They navigate highly technical specifications, manage critical engineering interfaces, and ensure strict compliance with the project requirement.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Specialized Sourcing: Manage strategic procurement (Bid & Execution phase) for heavy electrical packages (transformers, MV/LV switchgears, HT/LT cables etc.) and automation systems (DCS/PLC/SCADA system along with associated accessories & plant instrumentation).

Package Integration: Collaborate with Project manager, Lead Electrical & Automation Engineers to freeze technical specifications, manage interface matrices, and co-ordinate technical evaluation of vendors’ offer.

Vendor Development & Management: Identify, select & register new vendors, Build, and maintain supplier database. Perform Vendor rating, review and reporting of non-performers & record corrective actions. Develop alternate sources to have results-oriented environment during finalization stage.

Procurement Management: Issue specialized RFQs, prequalify vendors, and manage complex, multi-variable techno-commercial bid evaluations which includes below

Reduce costs at suppliers through effective utilization of procurement levers (e.g., negotiation- Conventional/virtual, cost transparency, e-sourcing, past purchase bench marking at bid stage & also in project execution.

Manage and track capacity utilization at suppliers as well as development status of new products.

Support with escalations, expediting and on-site tracking of progress of deliveries at suppliers to ensure on-time deliveries.

Forward systematically all relevant Procurement related project information (e.g., updated contractual conditions, Supplier Management data, supply market intelligence, commercial & technical trends, benchmarks) to keep all stakeholders up to date and maintain regular contact with relevant interfaces.

Well versed with the commercial terms & conditions for a typical EPC project.

 

Manage Controlling & Reporting - Support processes and methods to capture & report Procurement data.

Track KPIs and report on Project procurement’s performance

Support best-in-class Supply Chain Management processes to secure productivity, assets, quality, delivery reliability and innovation, including escalation.

Ensure data transparency and report relevant procurement KPI (e.g., cost savings, e-Auctions, Supply Base Optimization etc.) in assigned commodities/projects to ensure business planning and target achievement and to make results transparent.

 

Qualifications & Requirements

Education: Bachelor’s degree in electrical / electrical & Electronics engineering. Procurement certifications like CIPP/CIPM or CIPS are a plus.

Experience: 5 to 8 years of strategic procurement experience specifically handling E&A packages within Cement, Mining, Minerals, Metals, or similar heavy process industries.

Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of industrial electrical equipment MV Switchboards, LV Switchboards, Distribution Boards, Transformers, LV Motors, LV Drives, Busducts, Lighting Systems, LV & MV Capacitors, Trays & Earthing Systems, Air conditioning, Fire Alarm & detection AND Automation accessories like It Hardware, panels, Control desks, Instruments etc.

Software Proficiency: Hands-on experience with ERP procurement modules (SAP MM) and advanced commercial evaluation tools.

Core Competencies: Strong negotiation skills for high-value OEM packages, sharp risk-assessment capabilities, and experience handling bulk commodity price volatility (e.g., copper/aluminum for cables, transformers, busducts etc.)

 

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

Cost & Financial Efficiency

Cost Savings Against Budget: Total variance achieved between the finalized purchase order (PO) value and the original project baseline budget for Electrical & Automation (E&A) packages.

Cost Avoidance: Documented financial savings secured through value engineering, commercial negotiations, or favorable terms (e.g., waived escalation clauses for copper/aluminum).

Payment Term Optimization: Percentage of E&A packages aligned with or exceeding the company’s target working capital cycle (e.g., maximizing credit days, minimizing advance payments).

Technical Compliance & Quality

Technical Error Rate: Frequency of post-order amendments, variations, or change orders caused by procurement misalignment with engineering specifications.

Site Rejection Rate: Percentage of delivered E&A components or bulk materials rejected at the site during Receipt Inspection due to damages, incorrect specs, or missing documentation.

Warranty & Guarantee Security: Percentage of major OEM contracts containing fully secured, enforceable performance guarantees and liquidated damages (LD) flow-downs.

Supplier & Risk Management

Lead-Time Reduction: Measurable reduction in standard manufacturing lead times achieved through strategic vendor relationships or volume commitments.

Commodity Hedging Effectiveness: Percentage of bulk E&A orders (like HT/LT cables) successfully protected against market price volatility through timely index-based booking.

Vendor Service Availability: Success rate in securing OEM service engineers at the site for critical testing, commissioning, and startup phases on the requested dates.
